Condom Failure Rates

I was thinking about how before (and even while) flying a plane, you have to go through all these checklists, like, reading them off a chart out loud and making sure.  You can make a checklist joke here, but the point is just that a refresher is always good when the topic is important--seriously.  So here's this, and simple Google searches can get more info an all of it.  HERE.

  1. I never know what to think about articles like these. I'm a public-health nerd, so I'm all about educating and encouraging people to use condoms correctly.... but there are also a lot of ways to use them! Many people aren't wanting to use them for disease prevention and are just using them as contraception or extra contraception on top of an IUD, shot, pill etc. Heck, people willingly take them apart to use them as dental dams! I guess I'm curious how appalled we should really be and how much moral weight to give the concern. Are folks ignorant and careless in their sex-lives? Are they just acting on their preferences which might not fit the box instructions and descriptions to a T? Maybe the answer is yes, both.

  2. I agree, Annie. My only aim was to underline this message: condoms only get high scores in pregnancy and disease prevention when used as directed. And many people who do want to prevent disease and pregnancy don't use them as directed. Those folks, with those aims, need the reminder. As far as other uses, with other aims, I reckon the sky's the limit.
