Suicide or Martyrdom?

A clip from Lethal Weapon.  Mel Gibson plays a suicidal cop.  HERE

  1. That was such a strange situation, with the man behind the Christmas trees who was shot and then had a delayed reaction until the main guy seemed to elbow him in the gut. Anyways, on to the ethical consideration, I assume that Mel Gibson plays the lead character, the undercover cop. When the gunfire is turned on Mel, he tells that police to shoot him [the guy using Mel as a shield and pointing a gun at Mel's head] over and over. In this case, I do not believe that Mel is rationally wanting to die. Instead, he upholds the principle of justice and plans to incarcerate the criminal. If he had died, I would argue that he would have died either as a martyr because of his (questionable) role as a police officer or as a victim of a crime that does not have a higher rational rather than a criminal trying to escape the law.
Let it be noted that I haven't seen this film, so my opinions may be completely off point.
