Wow! That is really crazy. First of all, I didn't realize the black market for kidneys was such a big deal. But I definitely didn't think that anyone would sell someone else's kidney without them knowing it! This most certainly calls into question more ethical issues than just the patients autonomy. Understanding that there are doctors who are not above being bribed and that people do illegal things all the time, I wonder if this doctor was in on the scheme (considering it was a private nursing home, my inclination is to assume yes) or if requirements for informed consent are so different there, that there was a way for the doctor to truly not know?! This seems much less likely.
I agree that the doctor and other medical staff must have been aware of the illegality of it. It is very interesting when people in a field meant to help actually do the opposite.
